Panama Joe's

Next (and last) step is attending and speaking at City Council. No date set yet.
Zoning Administrator hearing occurred July 8, 2024 - application was approved.
Applicant for large parklet, with removal of 2 parking spaces, located at the Granada Ave intersection.
Large swaths of residents on Granada Ave consider Panama Joe's a horrible neighbor.
Key Points:
One of the biggest bars/restaurants on Second Street.
Dangerous corner at 2nd St & Granada Ave. Crash on July 22, 2024 took out two trees and their metal cages in front of Panama Joe's and Angel's Share Whiskey Lounge, along with a heater, planter and part of the fencing at Angel's Share.
A good number of Granada Avenue residents' concerns are: large crowds; high consumption of alcohol; sidewalk congestion from entry wait-lines and people congregating around sidewalk dining area to watch televisions directed towards sidewalk, blocking pedestrian pathways; loud music speakers directed outward; pedestrian safety risks; overserving patrons who then pass out, fight, litter, drive drunk, vomit and urinate on residents' lawns. Many Granada Avenue residents believe Panama Joe's should not be rewarded for their bad behavior.
Neither staff nor management intervene to solve right-of-way and ADA issues.
Already has several tables seating 16 patrons as part of sidewalk dining granted for free by the city in 1997.
Proposed parklet would remove two parking spaces even when parklet is not in use; ripple effects on community are 24/7/365.
20 parklet patrons and more staff members will create additional parking burdens on Second Street and the neighborhood.
If all current parklet applications on Second Street are approved, 18 vitally needed parking spaces will be permanently lost.
The LCDP is focused on beach accessibility, beach visibility and beach impacts. Your emailed comments should emphasize how giving up dozens of public parking spaces for bars and restaurants will harm residents' and visitors' ability to reach and enjoy the beach areas. (Think: two spaces AND more bar and restaurant parklet patrons AND more parklet staff, THUS more cars!)
